Talks at the Square – Creating Digitally-enabled Learning Health Systems
Aziz Sheikh, Professor of Primary Care Research and Development, and Director of the Usher Institute at the University of Edinburgh will visit BioInnovation Institute to give an exclusive talk at BII’s ‘Talks at the Square’ event series on the latest development in Learning Health Systems.
This event will put focus on health systems across the world and how they are investing in moving from paper-based to digital infrastructures. This creates major new opportunities for creating data enabled health systems characterised by continuous cycles of research and innovation, evaluation and learning as a by-product of routine delivery of care. In this presentation, Aziz will describe and summarise key elements of such Learning Health Systems, and highlight major developments designed to move healthcare into the 21st Century.

About Aziz Sheikh
Aziz Sheikh holds a medical doctorate from Imperial College London and has for the past years been a professor and director at the University of Edinburgh. He holds several positions as visiting chair and is Co-Director of Harvard Medical School’s Safety, Quality, Informatics Leadership (SQIL) Program. Aziz has substantive academic and health policy interests in leveraging the potential of health information technology and data science to transform the delivery of health care and improve population health. This has led him to work with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Bank, here he serves on the Steering Group and as Chair of the Evaluation Group of the WHO’s 3rd Global Safety Challenge on Medication Safety and is an adviser to the WHO’s Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office.
Aziz was in 2014 made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire for ‘Services to Medicine and Health Care’ by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. He was in 2017 awarded the American Public Health Association’s Donabedian Award and The University of Edinburgh’s Principal’s Medal for Exceptional Services.

‘Talks at the Square’ is an event series by BioInnovation Institute (BII) with a key focus on spreading ideas and knowledge in life science entrepreneurship to inspire researchers to bring science out of the lab and into the economy. The events feature high-level international speakers with topics that emphasize innovations and inspirational topics within biotech, medtech and pharma. The Talks at the Square events are hosted by BioInnovation Institute at the Square event space at the BII facilities in Copenhagen Bio Science Park (COBIS) in Copenhagen.
